Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide industrial hygiene (IH) and occupational health and safety (OSH) support for numerous clients such as the Department of Energy (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Projects and types of support may include:

  • Prepare hazard evaluations, risk assessments, technological feasibility analyses, industry and exposure profiles, and other analytical documents related to critical issues to be addressed in the development of occupational safety and health standards and guidance documents.
  • Perform literature searches, summarizing key occupational exposure, toxicity, other safety and health hazard information.
  • Conduct chemical, biological and radiation hazard screening.
  • Construct databases and provide information management and computer programming support, including providing assistance in identifying and using current technology for standards promulgation and guidance development.
  • Provide support to develop technological feasibility assessments for occupational exposure to hazardous substances such as infectious diseases, nPB (n-propyl bromide), welding fumes, and ammonium nitrate; and provide additional support for items that have been identified as candidates for future rulemaking and guidance projects. This support includes the following:
    • Develop, review, update, and revise industry profiles.
    • Develop, review, update, and revise exposure profiles.
    • Review scientific literature to assess potential health effects and risks and to identify relevant routes of exposure.
    • Review sampling methods and analytical methods.
    • Review, update, and revise description of control best practices.
    • Prepare preliminary assessments.
  • Conduct background research and review statements of stakeholders’ input to the standard development process.
  • Review the literature, attend stakeholder meetings, draft interview questions, and conduct site visits to identify any barriers to implementing a draft standard’s provisions.
  • Conduct site visits to assess current practices and control technologies.
  • Conduct comprehensive baseline IH surveys, indoor air quality surveys, local exhaust ventilation systems surveys, respiratory protection program, hearing conservation program, personal protective equipment program, ergonomics program, asbestos program, industrial hygiene equipment, food preparation areas, prescription safety eyeglasses program, hazardous materials management system, pre-renovation surveys, industrial hygiene laboratory services and analysis, emergency response, reports, meetings and consulting services.
  • Provide IH and OSH support, advising and assisting the client to assess, oversee and improve, as appropriate, the safety and health program and culture of the client including its oversight responsibility as it supervises the safety performance and safety culture of its prime and subcontractors.
  • Provide IH and OSH technical assistance support to the clients by conducting special studies, data analyses, and reviews to identify, analyze, and support the implementation of safety culture improvement initiatives, and safety and health data trending and reporting. Technical expertise is required in several topical or functional areas such as safety culture, occupational safety and health areas, operational awareness, performance improvement, and a variety of management, operational, and technical systems analyses.
  • Develop a variety of OSH communications/products from the review of client’s operating experiences program. Excellent writing skills and the ability to understand client needs and work with client to develop final products are necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Industrial Hygiene or related science or engineering required, M.S. a plus.
  • CIH certification or active pursuit of certification is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience, preferably in government (DOE, NASA, OSHA), laboratory, research and development or manufacturing, performing occupational health and safety activities.
  • Familiar in the use of industrial hygiene sampling equipment.
  • Some lifting and climbing required for the purpose of collecting samples.
  • Must be able to perform required job functions while wearing personal protective equipment, including air-purifying respirator.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in the English language.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
  • Must be detail-oriented, self-starter and have the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and perform work in an office environment, including extensive use of computers.
  • Ability to meet the requirements for a DOE security clearance and Building Access badge. Access will require the qualified candidate be a U.S. citizen. The candidate’s written consent to conduct a background check for the purposes of obtaining a security clearance will be required as a condition of employment.
  • Pre-employment and ongoing reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal substances will be conducted as a requirement for ongoing access to government sites. The candidate’s written consent to conduct such tests will be required as a condition of employment.
  • Travel of approximately 10% may be necessary.
