NASA Industrial Hygienist

The purpose of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center on-site industrial hygienist position is to support an Industrial Hygiene (IH) program at a federal facility in order to prevent injuries and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for federal and contract employees. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field surveys, assessments, and investigations, as well as developing recommendations for the federal client’s civil employees, based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)/Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, consensus standards, and other agency-specific directives.

Responsibilities:

Provide IH services to support a team of industrial hygienists. The services may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct industrial hygiene baseline and follow-on surveys.
  • Conduct Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments based on employee complaints and recommendations.
  • Conduct local exhaust ventilation system surveys.
  • Provide annual training and fit tests to employees enrolled in the Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Provide annual hearing conservation training to employees during Safety Awareness Week.
  • Measure and evaluate noise levels of all organization operations as necessary.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments as requested by the Agency’s civil servants.
  • Provide consultative services relative to the identification, evaluation, and selection of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), and perform chemical exposure risk assessments as requested or as necessary.
  • Review all aspects of the asbestos and lead abatement project process, including submittals by asbestos abatement contractors, as well as approval or rejection of asbestos abatement plans.
  • Provide technical assistance and review plans, drawings, and design specifications for new facilities and modifications to existing facilities to ensure inclusion of necessary health hazard controls.
  • Respond to chemical spill emergencies and alarms as necessary.
  • Provide operational support by performing oxygen deficiency hazard assessments as appropriate.
  • Provide support during food safety audits.
  • Maintain IH instruments and ensure equipment is functional and calibrated as appropriate.
  • Review new chemical purchases to determine safety and health considerations and provide recommendations.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of industrial hygiene experience and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
  • Experience a plus, preferably in government (Department of Energy, NASA, OSHA), laboratory, research and development, or manufacturing, performing occupational health and safety activities.
  • Asbestos certification desirable but not required.
  • Familiar in the use of industrial hygiene sampling equipment.
  • Some lifting and climbing required for the purpose of collecting samples.
  • Must be able to perform required job functions while wearing PPE, including an air-purifying respirator.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in the English language.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification or active pursuit of certification highly desirable, but not required.
  • Must be a detail-oriented self-starter and have the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to meet the requirements for a NASA security clearance and Building Access Only badge. Access will require the qualified candidate be a U.S. citizen. The candidate’s written consent to conduct a background check for the purposes of obtaining a security clearance will be required as a condition of employment.
  • Pre-employment and ongoing reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal substances may be conducted as a requirement for ongoing access to government sites. The candidate’s written consent to conduct such tests will be required as a condition of employment.
  • Travel of approximately 10% may be necessary.
